Health Insurance Requirements for Studying in New Zealand

If you are planning to study in New Zealand, you’ve likely seen the phrase “full medical and travel insurance” in your visa requirements. It’s not just a box to tick, it’s a critical requirement under the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students.

Why Your Home Country Insurance Likely Won’t Suffice

Many international students make the mistake of assuming their home-country health policy will cover them. However, New Zealand has specific requirements for international students:

● Immigration Compliance: You must hold an acceptable policy from the moment you leave your home country until the expiry of your student visa.

● Public System Eligibility: International students are generally ineligible for publicly funded health services in New Zealand. You are responsible for all medical costs incurred.

● The “Gap” Problem: Even if you have coverage at home, it rarely includes the necessary medical repatriation, search and rescue, or the specific liability coverage required by New Zealand education providers.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

1. Waiting until arrival: Insurance must be active from your departure date. Don’t arrive in New Zealand uninsured.

2. Choosing the cheapest “basic” policy: You need a policy that specifically covers hospitalisation, emergency surgery, and mental health support. If your policy has low limits, you will be liable for the thousands of dollars in difference if a major event occurs.

3. Ignoring pre-existing conditions: If you are on medication or have a known health history, standard student policies may exclude these. You must declare these conditions upfront to ensure you are actually covered.

What “Acceptable” Insurance Means

Immigration New Zealand (INZ) and your education provider will expect a policy that covers:

● Medical and travel: Unlimited medical coverage for emergency treatment and hospitalisation.

● Repatriation: The cost of getting you home if you are too ill to continue your studies.

● Personal Liability: Protection if you accidentally cause injury or damage to property.

Don’t Risk Your Visa

Most New Zealand universities and PTEs (Private Training Establishments) will automatically bill you for a “default” policy. While these are safe bets, they aren’t always the most cost-effective or tailored options for your specific needs.
